			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Kumbakonam is a famous town and a special grade municipality situated in the Thanjavur district of Tamilnadu, India. It is a fluttering town that has been attracting pilgrims and architecture enthusiasts for decades. It is considered to be the second largest town and the oldest one in the Thanjavur district. It is also called as “Temple Town” since there are so many temples in and around kumbakonam. Agriculture is the main source for livelihood in the town as it is located on the southern bank of the River Cauvery, and tourism is another blooming industry. Most people visit this beautiful place to pay their tributes to the large number of temples there and to study their architectural brilliance.</p>
<p>Kumbakonam is an ancient city where, as people say lord shiva’s arrow crashed the cosmic pot, containing the spiritual sweet drink of creation. The Myth has given kumbakonam both its name and holiness represents the traditional culture values of the tamil. This town can be addressed as the religious center, commercial and craft center. Kumbakonam is also famous for its textiles, jewels, bronze, copper and lead vessels. Thirubuvanam which is located 8 kilometers away from kumbakonam is famous for its silk saris. Kumbakonam is also an important silk-weaving centre and more than 5000 families were employed in silk-weaving either directly or indirectly. Silk weaved in and around kumbakonam is recognized as one of the finest in the country.</p>
<p>Kumbakonam is well-connected to all parts of india by means of transport. The nearest international airport is at Tiruchirapalli which is 94 kilometers away from kumbakonam, and the nearest seaport is at Nagapattinam which is 50 kilometers from the town. Trains and buses are available in the town to reach any part of the country. Kumbakonam arised as an important centre of education in the late 19<sup>th</sup> century and is well known as the “Cambridge of South India”. The people of kumbakonam feel proud of a huge festival called “Mahamaham” that is conducted every 12 years. This festival takes place around the mahamaham tank, which consists of the combination of holy water brought in from around nine major rivers in the country.
